Archers On Target in the Paralympic Ranking Round
Athens, Greece (USOC)- American archers Lindsey Carmichael (Lago Vista, Texas) and Jeff Fabry (Tulare, Calif.) set new world records in their divisions during the ranking round on Tuesday.
Carmichael, along with the Chinese competitor Yanhong Wang, set a new world record with a score of 603 out of a possible 720. “The day was wonderful,” says Carmichael who competes in the Women’s Individual Standing division. “The conditions were great and everything fell into place. I did not realize how well I was shooting until the end when I saw my score.”
Fabry scored 677 points, out of a possible 720, breaking the old world record by 34. “When my first arrow hit the X, I knew it was going to be a good day,” explains Fabry who competes in the Men’s Individual- W1 division. “I was able to maintain my form throughout the day.”
“It was a good day at the office,” says coach Glen Harris (Langley, Wash.). “Lindsey and Jeff set world records and the rest of the guys did average which is an accomplishment at this level of competition.”
Aaron Cross (St. Cloud, Minn.) and Chuck Lear (Lee’s Summit, Mo.) compete in the Men’s Individual- W1 division along with Fabry. Cross finished tenth with a score of 587 followed immediately by his teammate Lear with a score of 585.
Kevin Stone (Adrian, Mich.) placed sixteenth in the Men’s Individual- W2 division with a score of 595.
The men’s team is ranked second behind the team from Korea. “That is the highest we have ever been ranked,” says Harris. “This is huge.”
The ranking round is used to place all competitors in numeric order for the elimination round bracketing. All future competition is single elimination.
Carmichael competes in the first round of eliminations on Wednesday. Fabry, Cross and Lear begins shooting on Friday. Stone starts his pursuit for a medal on Thursday. The men’s team competition will be held Sunday.
