Friday Results: Jeff Fabry Advances To Semifinals
Athens, Greece (USOC) - U.S. archer Jeff Fabry (Tulare, Calif.) advanced to the semifinals of the Men’s Individual-W1. Fabry, who had a bye in the 1/8 round, faced Jean Pierre Antonios of Finland.
Fabry, who set the world record in the ranking round, beat the Fin 109 to 102. “Today was a little exciting,” says Fabry. “The adrenaline was pumping and the first shots were a little rough.” In the first end Fabry scored hit two eight-point shots and one nine-point shot. During the rest of the rounds Fabry was nearly perfect scoring 29, 27 and 28 out of a possible 30 in each round.
“I have been in pressure cookers situations before but nothing like this,” explains Fabry. “I do not know why the adrenaline was going, it just was. Once I got into a rhythm I calmed down.”
Also competing on Friday in the Men’s Individual-W1 were Chuck Lear (Lees Summit, Mo.) and Aaron Cross (St. Cloud, Minn.). Both were knocked out of the 1/8 elimination rounds. “Chuck shot better than expected,” says coach Glen Harris (Langley, Wash.). “Chuck is new to the sport and competed against an experienced archer. He did well.”
Cross’ round was tied at 150 points the end of the 18 arrows forcing the competition to go into a sudden death shoot-out. Cross, a three-time Paralympian, shot an eight while his opponent shot a nine.
Fabry competes on Saturday in semifinals. Fabry, Cross and Kevin Stone (Adrain, Mich.) will also compete in the team competition on Sunday.
